Duns and Burys

Frances

Broderick speculates and I agree that Dhowan is derived from Gaelic Dun - a fort. However I would go further and speculate that Ghowan derives from the Gen. of Dhowin hence Mac Gawen - Gawne and Ballagawne. This is corroberated by Ballagawne at KM which is very close to the fort implied by Bordal and Berk. Also at Onchan Tresberry is an alternative for Bemahague, and there were three quarterlands in 1511 all occupied by McGawens. Three Burys = three forts = 3 Gawnes? It suggests that the three quarterlands originally had their caputs close together either on the top of Cronk y Berry (Hill of the Bury??) or on the coast near Onchan Park. or both??? Of course Broderick does not think Berry derived from A/S Bury.
