Re: CREECH / CREETCH
In Response To: Re: CREECH / CREETCH ()

Hi Gary,
Yes, I had Creech ancestors in Maughold. It was because William Creech of Cardle Voar (1728-1793) married 1754 [1] Esther Carran (d.1755) that Brian became interested in the family. This William distinguished himself by the number of illegitimate children he was supporting from an early age. William married 1755 [2] Margaret Kermeen (1719-1776), my ancestor, with whom he had children before, during, and after marrying Esther. He had one illegitimate son with Esther - John b.1751, a mariner who died unmarried in Liverpool, and 5 children with Margaret Kermeen. One, Mary b.1758, married Daniel Kinread, another interest of Brian's. The family arrived in Maughold from Braddan c.1700.

If I remember rightly there were two men called Gilnow Creech alive at the same time in Douglas/Braddan, and I don't think we ever sorted out for certain which was which, and therefore couldn't be sure of the parentage.
It is several years since I have looked at this family.

By the way, the "Crutch" spelling in the list at the Manx Museum Library would probably come from how it was recorded in naval records, rather than their error. If transcribing something from original records they wouldn't (shouldn't) change it.

It is great that Liz has taken the photo you were asking for.
