Someone once made the point that as Manx people often refer to the Isle of Man as 'the Island' that this could be misinterpreted by an enumerator as 'Ireland'. Or perhaps the enumerator took the family's details from the wife and made an assumption about the husband's place of birth. Have you found him before 1901?
