According to the 1901 census he was born in Ireland . There was a James Corkan christened to Joseph Corkan and Ann Jane Maxwell 25 Apl 1871 Armagh.

He married Catherine (Kate) Jones in a civil marriage at Altrincham, registerred at Trafford 1894.
