Re: SKILLICORN family of RAMSEY

Hi Sue,

Thanks for your nice words.

I, too, have suspected that Philiip who married Mary Garrett is the son of "old" Thomas Skillicorn. I am not sure this could ever be proven, as Philip was a younger son. The will of "old" Thomas leaves a "deed of gift" to his son Philip of Laxey (1745), and I haven't yet found any other Philips who might have received this gift.

However, I must say, there are still several early Skillicorn wills which I haven't seen, and a Philip could turn up in one of them who would fit Philip who married Mary Garrett.

The James son of Philip and Mary Garrett was not the James Skillicorn of Skinscoe.

James of Skinscoe, who was buried June 19, 1831 age 83 (His will identified him as James of Skinsco, wife Catherine) was the son of Thomas Skillicorn and Catherine Kewley.

The will of Thomas Skillicorn in 1794 identifies him as "of Skinscoe", and the will of his wife Catherine (1798) identifies her as Catherine Skillicorn als Kewley of Skinscoe.

The Liber Vast May 1794: "Thos, father is dead. Eldest son James Skillicorn heir at Law."

Incidentally, James Skillicorn and his wife (also Catherine Kewley) apparently had no children who lived to adulthood, as Skinscoe farm was left to James' nephew John Skillicorn (wife Ann Neild) of Liverpool, and was eventually sold.
