Re: SKILLICORN family of RAMSEY
In Response To: SKILLICORN family of RAMSEY ()

I agree that Thomas, bp Lonan, November 11, 1783, is probably “your” Thomas. I believe him to be s/o Philip Skillicorn/Judith Killey.

Philip, as Frances stated, is probably the s/o Philip Skillicorn and Mary Garrett, baptized Lonan, August 16, 1747. (I can give children and descendants of Philip and Mary, and will do so in a later post)

Frances: I believe this Philip to be the one who was involved with Thomas Quayle of Ballagare in the land dispute. (Will of Thomas Quayle 1798-8 of Ballagare, Lonan) What do you think?

Judith Killey (also known as “Joney”) was born about 1757, and died at Lonan April 6, 1805, age 48.

Judith/Joney Skillicorn’s will, 1805-2 Lonan, is not much help, as it names her eldest son James who receives half the land, her husband Philip, and the rest of the children.

However, there are several other wills which appear to tie this family together:

1. Charles Skillicorn, buried Lonan May 11, 1878, names next of kin John Killey, James Killey, and Thomas Skillicorn, all of Lonan.

2. decree of Margaret Skillicorn nee Killip who died July 27, 1817 age 23 (Lonan MI D-15) names husband James, guardians John and Thomas Skillicorn, all of Lonan.

3. Margaret’s identity as d/o William and Jane (Kewley) Killip is confirmed by the joint will of her parents dated October 22, 1831 and settled June 10, 1836. They left bequests to son John, to daughter Jane w/o Thomas Moore; Eleanor w/o James Kewley; Ann w/o John Skillicorn (NOTE she is my husband’s ancestor, and is of Ballacannell); and to granddaughter Jane Skillicorn, daughter of James Skillicorn.

4. decree of Joseph Skillicorn who died at Ramsey August 13, 1835 and was buried at Lonan. On August 24, 1835 Catherine (nee Clague) Skillicorn and Thomas Skillicorn, Joseph’s next of kin, petitioned the court for settlement of the estate. Also mentioned are Joseph’s brothers: Charles Skillicorn tailor of Lonan, James Skillicorn schoolmaster of Lonan. (Joseph Skillicorn was a baker in Ramsey).

Given the above, I believe the children of Philip Skillicorn and Judith Killey to be:

i. James Skillicorn “son of Philip Skillicorn of Laxey” bp December 1780, and buried at Lonan July 13, 1859. He married first, at Lonan, July 18, 1815, Margaret Killip. He married second, at Lonan, October 10, 1818, Ann Callow, daughter of John and Isabella (Kerruish) Callow. Ann Skillicorn age 72 of Ballagare, buried at Lonan ,January 18, 1855.

ii. Thomas Skillicorn, “son of Philip Skillicorn of Laxey” bp November 11, 1783. (I did not follow this Thomas, but I do believe he is “yours”). He is named as a guardian to niece Jane Skillicorn in 1817.

iii. John Skillicorn, baptized September 2, 1792. He is buried with his parents at Lonan. He was named as a guardian to niece Jane Skillicorn in 1817.

iv. Charles Skillicorn bp March 16, 1794, and buried at Lonan May 11, 1878, age 84. He married at Lonan, November 28, 1819, Ann Collister. This family was at Ballaglass.

v. Joseph Skillicorn (?bp August 26, 1796?) and died at Ramsey, August 13, 1835. He married at Maughold, September 13, 1825, Catherine Clague. (There is a Joseph Skillicorn who married at Lonan, March 16, 1816, Isabel Kneale. Isabel was buried at Lonan, April 7, 1817. I have not been able to determine if these two Joseph Skillicorns are actually the same person.)

vi. William Skillicorn “son of Philip and Judith Killey” was baptized November 17, 1799.

I have more on the descendants of most of these families, if anyone is interested.

Other possible children of Philip and Joney Killey: You will note there is a big gap in the births of Philip and Judith’s children between 1783 and 1792.

(all listed as children of Philip, and I haven’t been able to tie them to this Philip, nor to any other):
i. Margaret February 23, 1777

ii. Jane November 22, 1778

iii. Joney July 29, 1787

iv. Philip March 26, 1786

v. Mary July 12, 1789
