Hi Eric
You've answered a question we've puzzled over in the past--ie why did Thomas and Eleanor take so long to start making babies? Now we know that they had one before Thomas. Thank you for the new info.
William and Catherine's 4th child, Alice b 1847, was my g grandmother. At census time in 1851 she was a 3 year old granddaughter in the household of her maternal grandparents, Thomas Clague and Esther nee Kneen, at Arragon Mooar, Santon, and her name was spelled "Clague". Her aunts and uncles in the household were the siblings of the "brothers in law" in the Liverpool Lime Street household of Wm and Cath.
In 1861, Wm and Cath were back on the IOM (Braddan) and were spelling their name "Clague" again. In their household was a niece, Charlotte Hudson b 1852 whose mother, Charlotte Clague b 1813 married John Hudgeon b 1803. Once again, Alice was staying with her grandparents who were now at Ballacomish, Arbory. How fortunate that these people lived in mixed up households---it makes our task so much easier!
By 1871, Wm and Cath are back in Liverpool (Erskine Street--I think Ancestry has them as Cleff ) and they're all "Clegg", including Alice.
In 1881 and 1891 Wm and Cath are in Douglas, using the spelling "Clegg".
