My problem is that I can't find a baptism for my Hugh when, according to the censuses, he was born in Douglas anytime between 1823 and 1829, or a burial for him (according to his will he died in December 1890 in Douglas). I have register entries for 2 of his children where he is named as Hugh, and the marriage record of a son, which names him likewise. I wondered if an alternative name for Hugh might find him but there are no Ewans, no unallocated Johns and I have never seen Juan/Yuan in a register. It's a puzzle.
