Thanks Frances for passing on that thorough philological summary. I always think that kind of thing is very interesting. I was aware, though not so eruditely, of the Juan/Yuan/Ean bit, but the use of Hugh was new to me.
I still can't account for the lack of a baptism or burial for the Hugh mentioned in Douglas censuses although I have an 1891 will for him (doesn't give away much).
