Hi Pauline,
Got a Garrett in Ramsey!
"When several Scottish merchants came to the island with herring in the spring of 1595, the governor Randaulph Stanley, 'not knowing what neede the Countrey had thereof,' consulted the four merchants of the isle appointed to deal with merchant strangers to 'understand the want of the Countrey in that behalfe.' The general consensus was that the inhabitants were 'already sufficientlie provided of heyringes,' presumeably after a successful fishery in the year before, and only two men, Evan Garrett and John Stevenson, were licensed to buy herring from the Scotsmen. Garrett purchased a barqueload at Ramsey of which, under the watchful eye of the waterbailiff, he was to dispose 'for the use of the countrey;' Stevenson was told to go to Douglas where he might have 'so manie heyringes as will satisfie his want.'
Also a reference to Sayle:
In 1661, Ewan Curghey, coroner of Ayre charged William Sayle to appear before Deemster John Christian at Milntown; Sayle failed to present himself at the deemsters residence and was accordingly fined 12d.
Hope that helps
