Yes there was a mention of a uniform but like quite a few of the "facts" that I was given re John William and William many are turning out to be family wishful thinking! Currently it appears there is no evidence that this photo is of either gentleman!

When John William was on the Prince Of Wales it was still a IOM steamship, it didn't get bought by the admiralty until later.
