the point of child marriages was not immediate procreation but the keeping of land within a group of families - there are a few examples of daughters being married very early for this purpose but children appeared after some years - for non-landowners the boy needed to support the family thus a somewhat later age of marriage for males than for females applied (and still does). A young (ie about 21) age of marriage for a male often indicates lack of family support (eg orphans)
