Census occupations - I agree with Frances. The terms seem to be used interchangeably, probably more at the whim of the enumerator. I have not done a study on the subject, but my feeling is that one term or another predominates with a particular enumerator.
Name spellings - particularly earlier ones, depends more on the recording clerk than on a parents preference. Leuisa and Flaurance were particularly noticable in the birth registrations for Malew but don't recall them finding their way into the census.
From a legal point of view, I understand that you can call yourself whatever you want as long as it not done for illegal purposes.
