Re: Thomas Crye
In Response To: Re: Thomas Crye ()

moves from Chester to Perth in 16th Century are fairly unlikely (England & Scotland were 2 different countries not always at peace !) let alone a move from the East coast of Scotland to the Isle of Man (and Jurby is not a major parish) , moves are not impossible but very implausible - the name crye has been found on the Island from c.1580 (eg. Henrie Crye down for rent of Ballacrij) - Moore derives it as possibly from MacCraith, 'Weaver's Son.' In Ireland and Scotland this name is now found in the form MACRAE - Cry is seen as surname by 1611 and 1622 for Crye in the parish registers which don't go back much before these dates - the name is seen in Braddan Manorial roll some 40 years earlier

It is possible that the posthumous son of John Cry of Jurby (will www.manxnotebook.com/famhist/wills/1727_jc.htm) moved to the USA in 1757
