David,
Great information! I think we are both from the same vein...so to speak!!!
My wonderful dad Norman Burnett born 1916 still alive today at 88 (quite ill currently) is the son of Mona Burnett (illigitimate birth). Mona Burnett was John James Burnett's youngest daughter of 6(or 'Jack' as you refer to him!) My dad remembers his Aunty 'Nellie' Helen Cantwell who he lived with from 4 Years old in Fazakerly!!!.
My dads older brother Gordon (Leslie) Burnett went further a field to Australia before settling in Wales where he died a few years ago.
John James Burnett had so many skills/jobs its hard to keep track. I have verified with the Lighthouse Association the following short career as a Light Keeper follwing in his Father's footsteps:
John James Burnett
Entered lighthouse service 2 October 1872 aged 26 2 October 1872 - McArthur’s Head - 1 year 5 months
20 March 1874 - Holburn Head
5 April 1878 left the service to proceed to Japan (NCL4/1/3 p. 358)
Thank you for the suggested date of Jessie Burnett's birthday. I have documents for all the other children's births as well as John James Burnett and Margaret Gillespies wedding entry 4th July 1873 at McArthur’s Head Lighthouse, Islay, Scotland.
I have further census records listing 'Jack' as a Ship Builder, Journeyman and Boilermaker changing trade it would seem every 10 years.
Also the records of Isle Of Man 1881 show John James Burnett's household living close to his retired father James Burnett.
The connection with 'JJ Burnett's Areated Water manufacturers on the Isle Of Man must also be him!!! I have tons of data since starting my research 12 months ago.
Margaret Gillespie's father Robert Gillespie was also a long serving Light Keeper in Scotland.
At the risk of turning this post into a novel I had best stop for now......!!!
If you are happy to divulge information on your grandmother 'Nellie' I am sure it will brighten my father's twilight days?
