Thanks for your comments Bruce. This is indeed the family of John Creer and Sarah Taggart (John being my ggg grandfather). I have details of all the John Creers (indeed all the Creers) from the 1841 and 1851C and have not been able to match any of them to my John Creer. I have identified all the children of John and Sarah (and their families) in the various censuses but without any cohabitation of a John Creer. Nor is there any evidence of his remarriage following the death of Sarah in 1826. Thus this recent clue of the detail on his daughter's marriage register in 1848 is the only trace I have of him since his wife died. There are no wills or burial records that fit on the Island or on the mainland. Hence my trying to make some interpretation out of the marriage register. I have seen mainland marriage certificates later on which do show when the father is deceased - but I am not certain what interpretation I can draw from this one.
