I think the actual date was March 25. For example:
December 31 1750 was followed by Jan 1st 1750

March 24 1750 was follwed by March 25 1751

Certain government departments being very resistant to change explains why the taxation year in UK still ends in April (taking into account the 11 'lost' days of September).
