John Grenham's Irish Ancestors website is useful when looking at surnames found in Ireland. Clinton is covered. I thought it might have been a surname introduced into the north of Ireland by Scottish settlers but it actually goes much further back. It is more concentrated in Leinster, the central eastern province with ports across from the Isle of Man. Looking at Irish census records for 1901 most Clintons were catholics.
