Frances, thanks for the additional information. I wonder if he had to sell the farm because of a judgement against Rev. J. Gelling and he knew he would lose his farm, which caused him to start drinking, or did he have to sell the farm because of losing income after being dismissed from the church because of his drinking. The legal case was in April of 1826, but he was defrocked in June of 1827 and then sells his farm in August of 1827. I wish I knew what took place in the time between the legal case in April 1826 and his defrocking in June of 1827.
