I wonder if I should have started a new post as this pertains to the earlier Gilbert Kennaugh, possibly born about 1670.
I have tried to put this into some kind of order, so hope you can follow. It is based on what I have found, and on Frances marriage contract input, and the Wills of Gilbert Kennaugh and Marriott (or Maryad) Qualtrough. The main confusion is with William and Gilbert possibly being interchanged in parish registers.
1. The marriage contract mentioned by Frances definitely seems to confirm that Gilbert Kennaugh was indeed the husband of Maryad.
2. Unknown birthdate for Gilbert or confirmation as to his parents, but it has been suggested that Phillip Kennaugh and Catherine Rowley might be, unfortunately this cannot be confirmed. This can be seen on familysearch.org. Indications are that they were married at Marown in 1659. Cannot find this marriage, and the name Rowley is not “local”. Wonder if it is possibly “Cowley” or “Kewley”?
3. Gilbert’s Will from 1717. The children named in this Will are: John (married Alice Corlett), Ann (md. John Cunnery), William (married Mary Costean), and Christopher (married Margaret Shimmin). There is one other name that I cannot find a baptism for and that is “Eliz” or “Eliza”. There is a Thomas Fargher shown as one of the two witnesses to this Will. Where does “Eliz” come from and where is Alice? The name Ann shows a definite “A”, but the name “Eliz” looks like an “E”, definitely not an “A”. Is it possible the writer of said Will misheard “Alice” and wrote in “Eliz”? Regardless, Alice married a Thomas Fargher. Suspect then that “Eliz” might have been meant to be “Alice”. Gilbert also “bequeathed to his son Christopher six shillings and to his grandchild one shilling”. The first born grandchild for Gilbert so far as I can tell will be John Kennaugh, baptised 15 February, 1717, son of William Kennaugh and Mary Costean, who were married 18th May, 1717 at Malew.
4. Children for Gilbert found in baptism records are: John (b. 1691), Ann (b. 1693), William (b. 1697), Alice (b. 1700), and Christopher (b. 1703).
5. There is no MI for either Gilbert or Marriot as I have checked with IOM FHS.
6. Cannot confirm Gilbert’s marriage date. 22 April 1688 is the date that the Malew Parish Register records when William Kennaugh married Maryad Qualtrough at Malew. Possibly incorrect. The key here is the name, Maryad Qualtrough.
7. In Marriott’s Will she names her son Christopher, her son John, her son William. Also “she left daughter Margaret” some clothing (who I cannot find). I wonder if perhaps this should have been her daughter-in-law as Christopher married a Margaret. She also names Alice, her daughter. There is mention of “Margaret’s youngest daughter, Dorothy”. I can find no baptism for a Dorothy Kennaugh prior to 1735. There is a baptism for a Dorothy Clague who is the daughter of a William Kennaugh who married a Margaret Clague. See note from Frances, i.e., “the m/c summary - dated 22 nov 1716; Patt Clague + wife Marjery obo son Will; Gilbt Keaniaugh + wife Maryad obo dau margt; to marry at Kk Malew within a month; Clagues to leave house + croft after their decease and a convenient room for young couple to live in; Kennaugh to give a cow in calfe + convenient bed clothes; witt Jon Bridson, Will Bridson, Cha Moore; court Oct 1720”.
8. The Margaret Kennaugh who married William Clague – this was on 4th December, 1716 at Malew. Daughter Dorothy was baptized 6 March 1719 at Malew, parents: Wm. Clague.
9. Was Margaret now excluded from Gilbert’s 1717 Will?
10. There is a baptism for a Margaret Kennaugh at Malew on 14 April, 1689; however, this shows parent as William. Is this again a mistranscription, should it be Gilbert? This would mean that she was born just under a year after the Gilbert/William and Marriott Q. marriage in 1688.
11. This is another baptism that might be of interest and which is not shown in either Gilbert or Marriott’s Wills. This is for Mary Keniagh on 23 June 1709 at Malew. Parent: Gilbt Kennaugh. Have not found a burial for her but must have been before 1717.
12. There is a burial for Margaret Clague (alias Kennaugh) at Malew on 27 February, 1746. I don't see any reference to this burial in "Memorials of God's Acre" by Wm. Harrison, 1797.
13. There is a christening for a Thomas Killey at German on 26 September, 1736. The parents are Thomas Killey and Elizabeth Kennaugh. Cannot find birth or marriage for Elizabeth. Still looking, don't know if this is "Eliz" in Gilbert Kennaugh's Will.
Comments would be appreciated on any of the above. If someone wishes this over to a new post please feel free to do so, I wasn't sure how to best accomplish that.
Thanks so much!
