In messages last October about Ballasloe, Maughold, it was mentioned that there are several trees on Ancestry and elsewhere which include William CORKILL & Catharine KELLY, and their descendants in the USA, Canada, Australia, and elsewhere.
I think the misconception that this couple came from Ballasloe, with William the son of James Corkill & Bahee Lawson, originated in the hand-written charts of Constance Radcliffe (which she intended only as rough guides to assist her with her published books and articles), and when this was put online, other people copied the error. It is also possible that someone overseas wrote to her for information, and she used her charts in her reply.
CR has two charts, one for Ballasloe Corkills, and the other for Ballagorry Mooar Corkills, both including a William Corkill b.1779, both marrying Cath Kelly, and both having descendants.
Firstly, there is no evidence of two marriages. Only one William Corkill married Catharine Kelly – in Maughold on 10 May 1800.
William Corkill son of James Corkill & Bahee Lawson, Ballasloe, was bapt Maughold 29 Aug.1779. He and his children are not mentioned in his mother’s will: www.jurbyjim.com/Temp/Will4_files/1815.04.htm
CR wrote that he died in 1832, but she also has a second Ballasloe Wm Corkill d.1832 (b.1781 son of John Corkill & Ann Kissag). There was only one Wm C. Maughold burial near that date: Wm CORKILL 53 B'Sloe May 7 1833, who could have been one or the other, but not both.
On the Ballasloe chart she has also given a burial for William Corkill & Cath Kelly’s son William as “William Corkill “1807-77 d[ied] at Ballasloe”.
There is a burial for William CORKILL, 73, Ballasloe, Maughold on 3 Feb 1878, but this was not the son of William Corkill & Cath Kelly whose son William was bapt 1807 (his details below), but of a William Corkill b.1805 who is in the 1871 census as aged 66, unmarr., landowner, in Ballasloe. In 1861 he is aged 56, with the head of the house his mother Margaret CORKILL, Widow, 84, sister Ann unm 59, & Margt’s g.daur Jamima 6. In 1841 they are at Ballasloe, William 37 farmer, Margaret 63, Ann 38, Margaret 8.
Ann (bapt 19 Dec 1802) and William CORKILL (bapt 17 Feb 1805) were the children of William CORKILL & Margaret KERMOD of Ballasloe, Maughold, who married 30 Oct 1802. Their other children were John bapt.13 Dec 1807; Margaret bapt.4 Nov 1810; & James bapt.25 Jul 1814.
Margaret CORKILL, 91, Ballasloe, was buried 30 June 1868.
It looks very likely that William’s father William CORKILL who married Margaret KERMOD was bapt 29 Aug.1779, the son of James Corkill & Bahee Lawson, and was probably buried aged 53 “B'Sloe” May 7 1833.
They had no son Robert.
So there is no evidence that William Corkill b.1779 son of James Corkill & Bahee Lawson, Ballasloe, had a wife Catharine Kelly or a son Robert Corkill who could have had descendants overseas.
On the other hand, there is considerable information about the Ballagorry Mooar William CORKILL, son of John CORKILL & Jane SKILLICORN, bapt.9 Aug 1779, married 10 May 1800 Catharine KELLY (possible daur of Robert Kelly & Mary Kneale bapt Maughold 11 Feb.1776). They had 7 children.

It is this Robert CORKILL who is wrongly included on many family trees as grandson of James Corkill & Bahee Lawson of Ballasloe Maughold, and with descendants in Australia.

To summarise, William Corkill bapt 9 Aug.1779-d.1855 & wife Catharine Kelly c.1776-1853 were from Ballagorry Mooar, Maughold, and William Corkill bapt 29 Aug.1779-d.1833 & wife Margaret Kermod c.1777-1868 were from Ballasloe, Maughold. Both couples had a son William Corkill, but only the Ballagorry Mooar couple had son Robert.
