After writing my message I remembered a new service from the New Zealand Society of Genealogists who are offering members a remote film reader service, whereby you can read the microfilms on your own computer! They have a digital film reader at their Auckland premises and can load the film onto it, and a member can log in remotely to view the film for 2 hours. Broadband not dial up is needed, though. They are offering their library films as well as ones ordered through the FamilySearch catalog, and these are not just wills of course, but parish records, army records, etc. You would still have to pay the rental fee to order these, but for people who don't have a FHC nearby it will be extremely helpful. They are also now offering free unlimited access to DocumentsOnline from the National Archives (UK) - at the moment their librarians have to do the look-ups, but they expect to get remote access during the year so that members can do their own.
