Re: Catherine Kermode, wife of Henry Skillicorn

John, I have my comments in italics. I hope you can follow. Your analysis of all of these Thomases is helpful, and I very much appreciate your ideas.

It seems that of the two Henry Skillicorns b.1733 son of Jno, Ballaragh & 1743 The name of the child in this entry is obliterated, but the final letter of the name is a “y”, name is assumed to be “Henry”, son of Philip and Mar[y] Garrett Lonan one has been lost without trace! I don’t follow this. I had just put together a hypothesis [which doesn't affect Catherine Kermode's line] but which may be relevant:

There is a will in Maughold 1809-73 (FHL film 0106237) for Joney Callow, who names, among others, Henry Skillicorn’s widow Catherine. I am pretty sure this must be Catherine Kermode, but don’t know the connection.

There seems to be a conflict of data between the two Thos Skillicorns who died in 1794 Lonan. Agree, it has plagued me for fifteen years or more! Lonan MIs has "Thos of Skilco d.1741 and THO his son d.17 Oct 1794"

Thomas Skillicorn, wife Eleanor MooreThomas who died April 15, 1741, age 33, was the son of Thomas Skillicorn and Joney Quay. He married, 1724, Eleanor Moore. Thomas Skillicorn’s 1741 will names his wife Eleanor executor. She is to give to his heir after her decease, and to give to Charles and James. 11-3-1741 Thos sr. enters claim; 12-1-1758 Charles arrives at lawful years (so born by December 1, 1744) Eleanor Skillicorn’s 1745 will mentions her son and heir Thomas, her sons Charles and James. Her only daughter Margaret is to be executor.

Thomas Skillicorn, wife Catherine Kewley
If Thomas died October 17, 1794, age 66, he was born about 1728 (calculated). But there is a burial for Thomas, Jan 26, 1794, which would fit better with Thomas, baptized March 12, 1726 being age 66 at death, and fits with the will. This Thomas married, 1747, Catherine Kewley.
Thomas Skillicorn’s 1794 will names his son James, sons Thomas and John, daughters Eleanor, Isabella, and Jane, grandson John. Daughter Margaret is named executor. Catherine Skillicorn died in 1798. In her will she left a crown to each of her sons and daughter, unnamed, a lamb to her grandson John Skillicorn. She named her unmarried daughter Margaret executrix.

Conclusion:
When the original parish registered was recopied (and the recopy is what the LDS filmed), Thomas who died in October was omitted. Then, when the MI was written (or transcribed) reference was made to the parish register recopy, and the error perpetuated.

I believe the one who died October 17, 1794, age 66 years old was the son of Thomas of Skilco who died April 15, 1741, age 33 years. Agree, except I think he died in January. The will of Thomas d.JAN 1794 gave him as "of Skinscoe" and was consistent with his marriage to Cath Kewley [he “fits” being s/o Thos d.1741].

The other Thomas d.Oct 17 was m. to Isabella Goldsmith. Agree except his will says he died latter end of October, which could be Oct 17, but not so stated. Further, I didn’t find a burial. In the latter's Will / wife's Decree his two brothers ["uncles on the father's side"] were named as HENRY and JOHN Skillicorn. Thos b.1726 s/o Thos d.1741 had no brother HENRY. When it came to "Settlement Time" in 1808 HENRY was deceased and his son Thos had taken his place [sounds like Henry d.1806?] Agree

If Thomas m. Isabel Goldsmith is the son of Philip/Mary, he had possible siblings (based on baptisms to a father Philip in the right time frame) John, Thomas, Margaret, Mary, Henry, Philip, James, Jane

Another Thomas Skillicorn married Isabel Cowel 1763 Lonan You have it correctly below–she was Isabel Callow; she died 1784 Her will mentions sons Thomas and James, children Philip, Charles, and Eleanor and he re-married to Joney Kermod. How do you know that he was the Thomas who married Joney Kermod? There is also a Thomas who married Joney Cross. In fact, how do you know he remarried at all?

They both died in June 1798 The Thomas and Joney who died in 1798 were Thomas and Joney Killey – Do you think possibly that Joney Killey was actually Joney Kermode? Or Joney Cross? and Thomas' sons Phillip & Charles petitioned the Court for guidance re u/a children - in this petition Thomas' n.o.k were named as JOHN and JAMES Skillicorn.

I thought that the Thomas Skillicorn will dated 1806 and probated 1812 was that of Thomas who married Isabel Callow. He mentions children Thomas, Philip, and Eleanor. I am not sure who Thomas’ father is, but I suspect Thomas was “Thomas of Raby”, and that he was the son of Philip of Raby, baptized 1722.

As far as I can ascertain [so far!] TWO Lonan Skillicorn families in the mid-18thC had siblings Thos, Henry, and John - those of John Skillicorn / Kath Skillicorn m.1722 and Phillip / Mary Garrett m.1735; but the latter couple also had a son JAMES. Thus I had assigned Henry d.1806 to parents John & Kath and NOT to Phillip & Mary. This would have Thomas Skillicorn m.1738 s/o Phill &Mary marrying Isabel Callow in 1763 then Joney Kermod in 1784, and Thomas Skillicorn s/o John & Kath b.1740 marrying Isabel Goldsmith [b1750] in 1780 at K Michael. It would also by default assign Henry b.1743 as h/o Cath Kermode. Catherine was Henry’s widow in 1808 (see above reference to Joney Callow of Maughold), which led me to assume that Catherine was recently widowed – no logical reason for that assumption!

Margaret Skillicorn als Fargher d.1820 was the wife of Henry of Ballaragh - she named all of her other children in her Will except son Henry, who was alive and the lawful heir. Henry in 1806 may have named only his youngest son Thomas for a similar reason. Agree.

Thanks so much for your analysis, and yet another way of looking at what we know for sure, which admittedly in pretty scant! I’ve given you my thinking on all of these Thomases, and look forward to your comments.

It’s only a hypothesis!! – I’ve quite likely missed a Skillicorn family with siblings Thomas, John & James of suitable birth dates, or made a silly mistake somewhere along the line!
