Re: for Sue re Thomas Radcliffe b.c. 1695/96

Hi Marna,

The main reason for the errors in CR's work, and then in Dr Shaw's article, was because Margaret CANNELL died as Margaret KNEAL 22 Dec.1723 [she married John Kneal after John Radcliffe's death], and they hadn't seen her will to see the relationships given there. This named her unmarried son Philip Radcliffe, her son Thomas Radcliffe and his son John Radcliffe, and her daughter Jony who was married to Philip Kynry, which tied them to John d.1701.

CR thought this branch had died out or disappeared and linked their better known descendants to the Belfast family who were closely related. Dr Shaw also thought his wife descended from the Belfast ones, whereas her ancestors were Philip Radcliffe & his second wife Joney Teare, as were mine.

I think I outlined all this in that posting you saw from Feb.2010.

As Carol wrote, Alice Radcliffe, daughter of John R. (Belfast) married Thomas Radcliffe her cousin. But Carol has a typo - her mother was Jane Teare not Joney.

Joney Teare married Philip R. (above). So many names the same!!

I have [Anne] "daur of Thos Ratcliff" bapt 12 Nov 1727 [alive 1757: in mother’s will] married Andreas John TEAR Nov.19th 1748. In the will of Margaret Radcliffe, daur of Thos and Alice, she mentions her sister Ann and Ann’s husband John Tear. Ann d. 20 Oct., buried 23 Oct. 1764.
Carol has transcribed their wills.
