many MI's postdate the first death mentioned by many years (possibly decades) - eg a child (probably well into middle life and with some capital) might well put up a MI to long dead parents and siblings - for those obviously reworked I suspect the stone was done in situ (or possibly removed to allow working on the flat) - some stones (esp victorian non-slate) appear to be replacements as original surface flaked
