Hello Karen......I have no knowledge of the Cowell family except that I was given some letters and docs belonging to my uncle Alex regarding the Palmer family and there was a postcard addressed to "James Cowell - Boat Island Lass off Peel (think it should have read "of Peel" maybe) - Lerwick - Shetland Island - Scotland" The writing was very feint but it mentioned a Charlie and Harry and looks to have been sent by a lady nemed Harry. The postmark was July 17 1907. I tried to work out what the message said and have got what I could read written down somewhere so if you are interested I will find it. James and Emma Cowell I think were brother and sister so wondered if this was THE James and the family. What I find puzzling was why my uncle had it when it was posted to James Cowell and what the connection was and as my uncle had died I couldn't ask him and my Dad had also died leaving the youngest brother who had no idea. The connection must be my grandfather Albert Palmer who for many years served with the Ramsey Lifeboat crew and also on fishing boats and spent his early years in Peel and also Ramsey and the photograph on the front of the postcard shows the crew of one of the lifeboats and my grandfather is on it so this particular James Cowell and my grandfather may have had some kind of connection both living in Peel and being seamen of one kind or another. I remember thinking that the lady who wrote the postcard had come for day so she may have been living at the time? My grandfather's best mate was John Crix (also on the photograph). My uncle Doug used to tell me that my grandfather talked about a man called Cain/Caine and he used to go around with a cart doing some kind of work. Anyway let me know what you think about the card etc. when you have time.
