Dear Mrs Rosa
I note your comments - I have explained the two Adam Caines one of Michael (Orristal) + the other 'of the gill' or Scrondall (later called Ravensdale) of Ballaugh (his wife was Ann Callister - his son's wife was ellinor clarke - see www.manxnotebook.com/famhist/families/acaine.htm ). I understand that you claim the Patrick son of Adam 'of the Gill' as the progenitor of the SC Cains - I suspect you missed the significance of my comment that
in Lib Vas May 1750 in the section covering mortgages is the entry
Scrondall (total rent 42s 6d) - Adam Caine & Pat Caine 10s 5½d drawn and Phill Craine 2s entered by vertue of a bill of mortgage from the sd Pat Caine & his wife dated the 5th Feb 1744 confirmed by the officers. Fine 5d
Now I've returned to Peel I've had chance to look at this mortgage - Museum ref North Side Mortgages May 1750 #82
Dated 5 Feb 1744; Pat Cain with consent of wife Ellinor Cain for consideration of £8 mortgage to friend Phillip Crain, taylor. Ballaugh a certain part of the qtrland of Knockan vizt the flatt called Cain's Flatt
This mortgage was acknowledged by Pat + Elinor on 1 May 1745 and went thru the court that month
The mortgage was redeemed 9 Jan 1764 - Philip Crain acknowledging being paid by Pat Cain
Now it is possible that Pat had somehow sent the £8 whilst 3000 miles away but I would have expected to see a note that Crain received money from the hands of ... the ack is the standard form atht the originator has paid.
Thus it would seem that Patk s/o Adam rwas in the Island in Oct 1764 (if he was elsewhere and no intention to return then the mortgage would have laped the following year and Phill Craine entered as owner.
I will return to the Ann Corlett question in a later posting.
