Thank you Bonnie. That filled in a lot of information for me. I'm wondering if you have the death dates for your g-g-grandparents Robert & Catherine (Caine)? She appears to be a widow in the 1880 census. Also for his siblings John and Ellen?
Ballamillaghyn is a farm in Braddan, a few miles northwest of Douglas and not far from the Marown border. The Gelling clan coming from there is huge and includes several correspondents of this board including Jean C who contributed earlier to this discussion.
I am not aware of a brother of 1807 Robert named William who married Jane Caine. There is WG-JC marriage 1829 in Kirk German, but this William was bapt 21 Apr 1805 Braddan son of Robert Gelling & Anne Kelly and would be a first cousin of your Robert. They lived at Baldwin Village in Marown.
Next question relates to the 1st of 5 children you've identified as belonging to RG/CC, "Thomas born 1842 IOM". I can see where this could come from because the 1880 census for John S Eakel & family that includes your g-grandfather Phillip Gelling (bro in law) also lists a Thomas Gelling age 40 working on the farm with "Other" as relationship. Now it turns out that the 1807 Robert had a younger brother Thomas, a miller who married Agnes Brough in 1839 and lived in Maughold. Thomas and Agnes had a son named Thomas born 1842 who disappears after 1861. I think that's him in Illinois in 1880, and he'd be a cousin.
This is a nit, but the IGI gives a baptism of 2 Jan 1849 St Lukes Baldwin for your g-grandfather Philip Caine Gelling. You said his birthdate was 28 Dec 1849. Is it 1848, or should the baptism date be 1850? Easy to make mistakes at the start of a year. Since my birthday is also Dec 28, I noticed it!
Eleanor Jane Gelling, eldest daughter of RG/CC was baptized 16 Aug 1846 St Lukes Baldwin. If she married John Eakel in 1880, she had her two children prior to marriage.
And speaking of marriage dates, the other daughter Esther born 1855 has an 1898 marriage date but produced 5 children. So if she had them all after she married at age 43, she was quite remarkable.
And lastly, special for Jean and Kay, I'm now totally convinced (again) that the John Gelling who married Elinor Crellin is the son of the miller Robert Gelling & Jane Kelly. I wonder if he was a miller too? The other candidate John (md Jony Quine) was a labourer in 1841 and just doesn't seem right. Also the two girls named "Charlotte Eleanor", both dubbed "Ellen", one b 1812 of Robert G & Ann Kelly and the other b 1816 of John & Elinor, would be cousins. With names like that, they must be related!
