Thank you for your help, what a wonderful response, i am so grateful to all who have replied.
George Allan was born in April 1862, one of 13 children, so that would make him, on his death to be 32.
It’s more probable he was the body found on Calf, as the family knew he made land.
> CERT 366 Body found ON Calf Island 15/01/1895 Cause of death unknown. Inquest by Coroner for Castletown district 17/01/ 1895
There is always the possibility that in fact his body was never found, it’s only that it ties in with the fact, the family were told he made land & was found , possibly with the ships papers.
The actual story in the family then was he climbed cliffs with the ships papers in his mouth, sounds very heroic !!!
I expect the usual family story, the beach sounds second best to me.
The strange bit is, my granny, [ in fact the family in general ] never spoke about the loss of her brother, so we never actually knew if there were any reports or letters from the shipping company, I expect there might have been, but nothing in the family records.
I am afraid I am a bit ignorant re IOM history, as I expect most in the mainland are!
Once again my grateful thanks to all who have contributed to this thread, just wonderful.
Regards
