I can't be sure if this Tom Costain is one of my relatives - but did notice in one of the census returns that Thomas Costain b.1819 had a neighbour at Clough or Claghbane also called Thomas and also a stonemason, with a wife called Elizabeth and several children. If he is the man you refer to, I think (from other family trees in Ancestry) that the two Thomas's may be cousins. I had found a Directory entry with both listed: one as Thomas Costain Stonemason, the other as Thomas Costain Jnr, Stonemason, which confused me slightly, as I expected this to refer to a son, but being cousins might explain it.
