If I were a betting person, I would use the 1920 census record found for the widowed Jella Quilliam on West Granite Street in Butte, Montana to figure a possible birthdate of her husband as being in 1881 which would fit with the 1910 Butte, Montana census of a single James Quilliam who then was 29 and who seems to have immigrated from "England" in 1902 -- the same time as the next guy on the census who was a 29 year old Frank Bell.
Lawsons index of registered births http://www.lawsons.ca/births/_bir_index.html gives the birth of a James Quilliam to a John Quilliam and Sophia Cannell as follows:
QUILLIAM, James 29 Dec 1881 Dou QUILLIAM, John CANNELL, Sophia
Which leads to the 1891 census below:
1891 RG 12/3486 page 16 enumeration District 22 Ecclesiastical District St. John
census Barrow-in-Furness Lancashsire, England
Household 89 / 75 Devonshire Buildings
number of rooms occupied if less than five = 2
John Quilliam Head married 38 French polisher Cabt. born in Douglas, Isle of Man
Sophia Quilliam Wife married 37 born in Ramsey, Isle of Man
John Quilliam daughter 15 hammer boy born in Manchester, Lancashire
William Quilliam son 10 Scholar born in Manchester, Lancashire
James 9 ditto born in Douglas, Isle of Man
Frederick 7 ditto born in Douglas, Isle of Man
William Smith boarder 42 boarder driller ship born in Manchester, Lancashire
Sylvester Quilliam son 11 Scholar born in Isle of Man, Douglas
I can't say I necessarily agree that all Quilliams even on the Isle of Man are necessarily that closely related but if I were a betting person, I'd bet these are your folks.
