hi Jessica ref.what were the Lancashire Fus. up to around the 9th Oct 1917
-on that date at 5-30 a.m. a general attack by British & Anzac forces was launched at the German positions . in the area around and including Houthulst Forest (during the Third Battle of Ypres or Passchendaele) -units of the Lancs Fus. were part of this attack.Weather conditions were severe with heavy rain causing a sea of mud notwithstanding the attack pressed on incurring heavy casualties .Sgt.J Lister of The Lancashire Fusiliers being awarded The Victoria Cross for capturing a strongpoint and taking a 100 prisoners. The attack ended in stalemate It is possible that during this action that Fusilier John Mylchreest was killed and is remembered at Tyne Cot the largest British war cemetery with 11,871 graves The names of 35,000 men who have no known grave are recorded on a wall at the back of the cemetery. Tyne Cot is said to have derived it,s unusual name from the fact that a battalion of Northumberland Fusiliers were reminded by nearby buildings of them being like Tyneside cottages. hope this information is of interest to you Jessica and John regards John Callow
