Duke Street

Some years ago the IoM Family History Society photographed three plans, obviously related to, and probably derived from, the 1842 Cadastral plan discussed elsewhere. The properties shown on this large single plan have been split between three overlapping portions each about 600 x 500 mm - which although losing some fine detail considerably simplifies the handling as complared to the single huge sheet.

Block 30 - the even-numbered properties from the large Cadastral plan

The northern part of Duke street from one of the smaller plans held by the IoM Fam Hist Soc [rotated 90% otherwise all text is upside down].

There some differences eg Edward Gelling £1000 in large plan but only £650 in smaller.

The properties in Duke St were numbered, for post delivery &c, in ascending order from Market place upwards to its junction with Strand Street. The first directory that numbers the properties is that of 1846 - the 1851 census also generally numbers properties but both the 1841 and 1851 censuses split the street between districts - the 1851 has the right hand side of the street in district 9 but the other side split between districts 5,6 and 7.
