Plans of Douglas prior to Ordnance Survey

There are four printed plans prior to the 1:500 plan produced by the Ordnance Survey in the mid 1860s

• 1789 - Fannin - included as an inset on his map of the Island
• 1833 - Wood - this also had an inset plan of Castletown.
• 1834 - Taggart - a reduced version of this was added as an inset on the 'New and Improved Map' produced by G Philip until c.1880
• 1849 - Sherwood - an attractive plan of the town which included the whole of the town's newly extended area

In 1842 a hand drawn single sheet Cadastral plan of Douglas was produced - this may well have triggered the production of Richard Sherwood junr's plan
