Index of papers in HO 99/17 - 1817-1830

HO 99 contains the papers sent to the Island - generally to the Governor or Lt Governor depending who was in residence at the time. HO 99/17 is the 2nd volume in this sub-series and with HO 99/18 cover the remainder of my period of interest. Each volume has an index and this is what is transcribed here, however the index in this volume is incomplete and the summarries are my own - however the index only gives the name of the recipient and the page it will be found on - the actual document needs to be seen to find the author and the date sent - the date received on Island may be many days later It was towards the middle of this period that the mail packet was repathed to run between Liverpool and Douglas; steam communication became the norm by the end of this period.

Most of the letters to Smelt have been copied into Governor's Letter Books 2 (1817) & 3 (1817-1832) where Smelt's replies &c may be found; Letters to Atholl & his replies &c are generally found in the Atholl Papers

The Summaries contain several common abbreviations, trans = transmitting, respg = respecting, rel: = relating [to], S of S = Secretary of State, Quant = Quarantine
