[From Home Office File HO 99/17]

Hobhouse to George Quayle - 26th May 1822

Whitehall May 26th 1822

Sir

I am directed by Mr Secy Peel to acquaint you that he has adverted to the Petition which was a few days since presented by you to the House of Commons complaining that Funds appropriated for promoting the Education of the People of the Isle of Man have been mismanaged & diverted from their original destination.

As your Petition does not state what the Charities are to which you allude nor what are the instances of mismanagement & misappropriation Mr Peel is unable to judge the proper mode on Enquiry to be instituted respecting them but I am to acquaint you that he is ready to attend to any statement which you may think fit to make on these points

I am &c

H Hobhouse
