Urban, &c., to our venerable brother the Bishop of Sodor, health, &c. The circumspect benignity of the Apostolic See, intent as it is upon the works of salvation, willingly gives the apostolic assent to and urges on with gracious favours the wishes of those who inspired by Divine grace long with earnest desire for an increase of the worship of the Divine name, and give to that object their aid and labour. In truth the petition on the part of our beloved sons the Provincial prior and Brethren of the Order of Minors of the province of Ireland, and the corresponding petition upon the part of Our beloved son the nobleman William Montague Earl of Salisbury set forth that it is known that in the Sodor diocese there is no establishment of the Order of Minors ; and that the said earl, giving thought to his own salvation and desiring to exchange by a happy traffic earthly for heavenly and transitory for eternal things, for the praise and glory of the Almighty God and for the salvation of his own soul and of the souls of other faithful ones of Christ, proposes to assign a place for the labours and use of the said friars in the village of St. Columba, in the Isle of Man in the said diocese, of which the said earl is lord. Wherefore, upon the part of the said Prior and Brethren and Earl, we have been humbly petitioned to deign in our Apostolical benignity to grant permission to the said Prior and Brethren to accept the place, and to construct or build on it a church or oratory, with a bell-tower, bell, cemetery, houses, and other neces-sary offices. We therefore, giving ear to these petitions, by Our Apostolical Letters communicate to you Brother, by these Apostolical Letters, that if the case is as stated, We grant permission to the said Prior and Brethren to accept the place if it befitting and suitable, and there-on to build or construct a church or oratory, together with a bell-tower, bell, cemetery, houses, and other necessary offices as aforesaid, provided that twelve brethren of the said Order can be fittingly and properly maintained at the place; without infringing however on the rights of the parochial church, or of any other in any respect ; notwithstanding the constitution of our predecessor Pope Boni-face VIII. of happy memory, which forbids Religious of the Mendicant Orders to accept new places without special licence of the Apostolic See making full and express mention of this prohibition. Given at Rome, at St. Peter's, the 8th day of December, in the sixth year of Our Pontificate. |
