LETTERS OF PROTECTION FOR MAGNUS.

A.D. 1255.

FOR MAGNIJS, KING OF MANN, INVESTED WITH A MILITARY BELT.

MAGNUS, King of Mann, whom the King of England lately invested with a military belt, on the feast of Easter, has letters of protection direct from the King, to endure so long as he remains faithful to the King. And it is commanded to all bailiffs and faithful subjects of the King to whom, etc., not to permit Harald* the son of Gothred, and Ivar and their accomplices, who wickedly slew Reginald formerly King of Mann, brother of the aforesaid king, to be received by any persons, in their parts. In Testimony, etc. Witness the King, at Westminster, the 21st day of April.

MAGNUS, Rex Mariniæ, quem Rex Angliæ nuper in festo Paschali, cingulo militiæ decoravit, habet litteras Regis de protectione simplices, duraturas quamdiu Regi fideles extiterit. Et mandatum est omnibus bath-vis et fidelibus Regis, ad quos, etc., quod Haraldurn filium Gothredi [Godredi] , et Tuar’ et complices eorum qui Reg’ quondam Regem Manniæ, fratrem prædicti Regis nequiter interfecerunt, non permittarit in partibus suis ab aliquibus receptari. In cujus, etc. Teste rege, apud Westm’ die xxi Aprilis.

* The Usurper, imprisoned by the King of Norway for his usurpation.
