Wm OWEN;
There has always been some doubt as to when and where Governor James Chaloner died. It is said he died in England; but that can hardly be so. On July 2nd, 1660, he is recorded is being Captain of the Company at Peele Castle, and on the 30th of the same month the Peel Company is set down as 'lately under the command of Captain James Chaloner deceased.' He probably died at Peel Castle between 2nd and 30th July. It is stated by A. W. Moore in his History (p. 279) that Chaloner died having taken 'a death sickness as the result of his imprisonment in Peel Castle by Lieutenant John Hathorne in the previous November.' [For details of the imprisonment of Governor James Chaloner see 'Journal of the Manx Museum,' Vol. II. pp. 1-4.]
