In 1828 the Duke of Atholl sold his manoral property and manoral rights to the British Crown - they would, for the next century, be administered by the British Government, initially under the Office of Woods and Forests, who appointed a local Crown Agent - the first of these was James McCrone,a natural choice in many respects as he had occupied a similar position under the 4th Duke, though he was in many respects a contentious appointee.
