[From Crown Agent's Letter Book 2]

James McCrone to Jas Quick acting Atty Genl

Ochre - 17 Nov 1835

Sir

I enclose a lease granted by the late Duke of Atholl to Thomas Satterwaite for making merchandize of yellow Ochre - To the lease Mr Grellier got an assignment from the Lessee, and he has dug the ochre and sold considerable quanities thereof always professing his readiness to pay the Lordship.

In May last I requested he would send me an account of his sales and on the 4th of that month he wrote to me making a shuffling excuse for delay as expressed in his letter also inclosed - The account of sales never having been rendered I wrote to him again, a few days ago, requesting it might be sent and I refer you to his answer, which I also send inclosed, and by which you will see he means to evade payment, and informs me he is to leave the Island tomorrow, therefore, that no blame may attach to me, as agent for the Crown, I consider it to be my bounden duty, to put the matter into your hands as acting Attorney General, believing that you will attend to the interest of the Crown, and that you will take especial care Mr Grellier shall not leave the Island until he renders the account of sales to pay the Lordship
