R. Steuart to Fraser. (Copy) The continued illness of Mr.Scott (Collector
of Customs at Douglas) makes him fear that the Commissioners of Customs
may send someone to replace him unless the Duke does something to stop it
in London. If he is retired care must be taken that a post so important
to the Duke's interest is filled by a suitable man. Mr.Scott is in perfect
mental health but cannot use his right hand. Mr. Clarke, the new Attorney
General is tackling his job with enthusiasm, and interfering in everything
witn such vigour as to get himself disliked, though he is rooting out many
evils. His claim to precedence over the Deemsters has caused much irritation to the other members of the Council and to the legal profession,so that a deadly feud now exists between them. |
