States thet hed been naturalized by the Duke's predecessor,and that he had brought men from Scotland to build the stone dykes which he wished to have permission to erect. In another letter of 1766 (copy attached) he states that he had introduced Grouse and Black Game from Scotland and that the former at least had prospered and multiplied until 1765 when "some of the Militery broke in upon them" which diminished but did not exterminate them. The country people call them Carcen Lewhellin,or Lewhellin Hens. |
