The next to hold this position was MICHAEL:, by race a Manxman, " a man venerable and pure in life, truly a gentle monk in deed as well as in dress ... and he ending the closing day of life in a good old age, honourably lies buried at Fountains "*; This charming little description in the Chronicle gives all that we know of him except that we may feel sure-since Fountains Abbey is a Cistercian foundation-that he belonged to that order. The Rev. John Quine thinks that he was the builder of the chancel in St. German's Cathedral.+
* Date of episcopate.
