" I leave and bequeath to the poor of Kk Braddan and Douglas, such of them as in some small measure I was formerly mindful of, (as my last farewell) {A legacy, to be ordered and paid as followeth, viz., 40s. to be put in Bank and added to my Lord Bishop Rutter's legacy of five pounds, now in the h...
" I give and bequeath the sum of three hundred pounds to the use of the poor of the Parish of Kk Braddan, including the Town of Douglas, in the Isle of Man, to be laid out by the Bishop and Governor of the said Island for the time being, and Mr. Willm. Thompson and his heirs in the purchase of some yearly rent or income, the produce or proceeds thereof annually, I do hereby appoint shall be paid and disposed of as the sd. Bishop of the sd. Island and the Governor thereof for the time being, and the sd. Wm. Thompson, of the sd. Island, mercht. and his heirs for ever, from time to time yearly direct and appoint."
" Thompson's legacy was by the Lord Chancellor of England ordered to be laid out on Government security, as by his Decree of the 21 Octr., 1720, and the same was certified on the 21 Novr., 1724, by a Master in Chancery, that the said sum of £300 was placed in the South Sea Annuities, for the purposes mentioned in the order of the sd. Court."
" No interest has been paid on Mr. Thompson's Charity since 1770."
There is also inserted in the Register of St. Matthew's, an Instrument from Thos. Thompson, the eldest son and heir-at-law of Jno. Thompson, who was eldest brother and heir-at-law of the sd. Wm. Thompson, assigning and making over to the Lord Bishop and Governor of the Isle of Man, for the time being, and their successors, an interest and claim in the said £300 laid out in South Sea Annuities, dated 10 Sep., 1779.
Mr. Frazer, of Lincoln Inn Fields, was employed to recover the dividends due on the said stock; and it appears from the accounts in St. Matthew's Chapel, that £18 or thereabouts was remitted by Mr. Frazer, on the 3 Augt., 1816, £12 of which was applied to the relief of the poor of Douglas, and the remainder to the poor of Kk Braddan in which proportion the remittances made by Mr. Frazer have been applied ever since 1816.
" Bequeathed £20 to the poor of the town and parish.'' See Ext. from the Will of his son William Murray, hereafter.
" She leaveth for the use of the poor of the town of Douglas, the sum of ten pounds, to be disposed of in such manner as her Exor. or such persons as he shall nominate shall see proper.,'
" I bequeath to the poor of the town of Douglas forty shillings as legacy."
"She left to the poor of the town and parish of Kk Braddan, the sum of ten pounds, to be laid out at interest for their benefit, as the Vicar and Wardens shall think fit."
"I leave and bequeath to the poor of the town of Douglas, and the parish of Kk Braddan, the sum of ten pounds, to be paid immediately after the probate of this Will, and to be put to interest, and the yearly interest thereout arising, to be disposed of equally betwixt the poor of the town and parish, in such manner as the parish Minister, Chaplain' and Wardens for the time being shall think proper."
" Item, I give and bequeath the sum of one hundred pounds to my Exors. hereinafter named, to be by them put out to interest, and the yearly produce thereof to be distributed amongst the poor of the town of Douglas, on every Good Friday, according to the discretion of such of my Exors. and their heirs, who shall be resident in the Isle of Man."
Bishop Wilson, David Agoin, John Murray, of Chester, Wm. Murray, John Kelly, and Eward Moore, Exors.
This Bequest remained in the hands of his daughter, Elizth. Smith, and was paid by her Exor. See extract from her Will, hereafter.
" I bequeath to my aunt, Sarah White, ten pounds Brit., to be left under the care of the Rev. Phil. Moore, to be put out at interest for her use, and to pay her out of the said principal and interest 20s. Brit. yearly, whilst it shall-last; and if any remains after her death, it shall fall to the use of the poor of Douglas.
" I give and bequeath to the poor of Douglas ten ponds sterling, to be laid out by the discretion of the Curate and Wardens as legacy",
"And I also leave and bequeath the sum of fifty pounds, to be laid out to pious and charitable uses, at the discretion of my Exorx."
CHARLOTTE TEARE, Exorx.
This Bequest is supposed to have been laid out in building two small houses in Douglas, occupied by four poor widows.
" I leave to the poor of the town of Douglas five pounds, to be laid out at interest by the Wardens of the said town, and distributed yearly among such objects as the Minister and Wardens may think proper."

The foregoing includes all the Bequests to the poor of Douglas, which are entered on the poor's books of St. Matthew's Chapel, Douglas, or which can be ascertained by examination of the Ecclesiastical Registries, to the year 1784, inclusive; and of these Bequests, Chs. Killey's, John Oates's, and John Mahood's, have been entered by former Wardens of St. Matthew's as lost by the insolvency of the persons in whose. hands they were placed. Such entry is probably erroneous. In the year 1784, the Minister and Wardens of St. Matthew's had in hands the sum of £71 Mx., which will include the above amt., with an addition of £10 11s. 11d., which has probably been an accumulation of interest, and perhaps some small bequests not enumerated. For this sum of £71 Mx., a mortgage front Wm. Hampton was taken, dated 1788, bearing interest at 5 p. cent. In 1796 this mortgage was paid off, and the proceeds applied to the repairs and enlargement of Lasnon's house, bequeathed to the poor of the town.
" I leave and bequeath unto the Wardens of Douglas and Kirk Braddan, In Trust for the poor of the town and parish, the sum of five pounds per annum, additional to my father's legacy of twenty shillings, which will be in the whole six pounds per annum," &c. WILLIAM TEARE, Exor. £50 Mx., or £42 17s. 1d. writ to the poor of Douglas by this Bequest, is secured on the estate of Port-e-chee, the interest at 5 p. cent., being a perpetual rent charge. Mr. David Murray's Bequest referred to, £1 p. ann., on £20 principal, was secured in mortgage for £71, as before mentioned.
" I bequeath to the poor of Douglas, the sum of fifteen pounds Brit." This Bequest of £15 Brit., or £17 10s. oaf. Mx., is secured by mortgage from Matt. Simpson, on property in Douglas, dated 17 May, 1812, bearing interest at 5 p. cent p. ann.
" I give, devise, and bequeath unto the Chaplain and Wardens of Douglas aforesaid, for the time being, and their successors for ever, all that my new-built house and yard in Douglas aforesd. with the appurtenances, In Trust to pay the rents to Isabella Corrin, and Jane Grandon," &c. &c." And after the death of the sd. Isabella Corrin and Jane Grandon, to distribute the clear yearly rent of the sd. premes. for ever, after deducting all necessary outgoings and repairs, to and amongst the poor of Douglas," &c. `' And my will is, that this be called Lasnon's Charity." This house has been appropriated for the residence of several aged and infirm paupers. A back-yard and cow-house attached to it, are let to Mr. Leeson, at five guineas p. ann.
" I give the sum of thirty pounds Brit., to the Chaplain and Wardens of Douglas, to be by them laid out at interest, and I desire that the interest thereof he paid and distributed to and amongst such poor persons in Douglas, at such times and in such proportions, as the sd. Chaplain and Wardens for the time being shall think proper."
Her Will is not to be found. There is this note in the Register of St. Matthew's,-"By Elizth. Smith, als. Murray, including her father, John Murray's Moo legacy, left in the year 1739, sum £300 in the stocks, equal to £195 10s.6d. English, £228 2s. 3d. Mx." See page 103.
"I leave and bequeath to the poor of Douglas the sum of five pounds Brit., to be put to interest for their benefit for ever."
"I leave and bequeath to the Vicar and Wardens of St. Matthew's Chapel, in the town of Douglas, In Trust for the benefit of the poor in the said town of Douglas, the sum of one hundred and three pounds Bit., the said sum being now secured upon the estate of Shenvalla, in the parish of Malew."
"I bequeath to the Minister and Wardens of St. Matthews Chapel, in Douglas, for the time being, and their successors, the sum of one hundred pounds Brit., which I have in the hands of Geo. and Silvester Callow, In Trust to place out the same at interest on good security, and to pay such interest to the persons managing the House of Industry in the town: and in failure of the said House of Industry, or the falling away of such establishment, In Trust to pay such interest to and amongst the poor of the said town, in such manner as the sd. Trustees or a majority of them may direct. I bequeath to the Minister and Wardens of St. Matthew's Chapel aforesaid the sum of one hundred pounds Brit., which I have in the hands of George and Silvester Callow, In Trust to place out the same at interest on good security, and to pay such interest to the persons managing the Lancastrian School in the sd. town of Douglas: and in case of the failure of such School, In Trust to pay and apply such interest to the persons managing the House of Industry aforesd: and in failure of such House of Industry :In Trust to pay the said interest to and amongst the poor of the sd. town, in such manner as the sd.
