THE MANX CHURCH.

Without entering into the controversy which has arisen of late years as to the antiquity of the Church in the Isle of Man, there can be no doubt, more particularly from the Irish ecclesiastical records, that from the fifth century the Church was established in the Island, either as a centre for mission purposes, as at Iona, or to provide spiritual ministrations for the inhabitants. The treen chapels scattered over the country, of which numerous ruins and traces still remain, show the effective and systematic way in which Christianity was advanced by our forefathers. Subsequently the Island was divided into 17 parishes, eight in the northern and nine in the southern division, and these again in some special cases, such as Braddan, for the more efficient working of the Church system, have been subdivided into ecclesiastical districts. The history of the Manx Church is full of interest ; and though the diocese of Sodor and Man is now the smallest of the English sees, it is believed by many to be the most ancient, and to have enjoyed an uninterrupted succession of bishops from the first introduction of Christianity till now. Many of these were men whose names are still held in honour in the Church of Christ, and together they form a roll which will bear comparison with the holders of many another bishopric. Without referring to the very earliest names of German and Maughold, which are still remembered by the churches and parishes dedicated to their memory, we may mention Bishops Simon, Mark, Farrar, Phillips, Butter, Barrow, and Lake, all of whom were distinguished by the work they did. But in modern times the sainted Thomas Wilson, who held the see for about 60 years, and after him the revered Mark Hildesley, who completed the translation of the Scriptures into Manx, have rendered remarkable the bishopric of Sodor and Man. It is a pity that the three immediate successors of good Bishop Hildesley were all of them inefficient. Bishop Richmond was only remarkable for his unbending haughtiness ; Dr. Mason was disgraced by a derangement in his circumstances utterly inconsistent with his station ; and Bishop Crigan, from the absence of all energy of mind, could not sustain the dignity of his office. It is no wonder, therefore, that during this period of episcopal incapacity the Church materially suffered, and that Methodism, supported by the visits of John Wesley, gained a strong hold in the Isle of Man. Bishop Ward did much to bring back the Church to her old state of efficiency by restoring and rebuilding her places of worship. Bishop Short was indefatigable in the matter of education ; and the present Bishop (Dr. Rowley Hill) seems determined, by building new churches, forming new districts, introducing good ministers, and stirring up a thorough work of Evangelisation in the Island, to restore the prestige of the Manx Church.

The amount of money raised by the Church year by year in the Isle of Man it is impossible to calculate. There are no poor rates, but the poor are mainly supported by the collections made every Sunday in the churches. The House of Industry, the Hospital, and other charitable institutions, as the subscription lists will show, are largely supported by the contributions of Church-men. Yet, in spite of this heavy burden, which she has always cheerfully borne, as feeling it her duty and privilege to fulfil the law of Christ, the Manx Church raises yearly, for the furtherance of home and foreign mission work, about £1,000. This no doubt will be increased by the action of the newly-organized Diocesan Conference ; and we may add that Bishop Hill has, within the last year or two, formed a Manx Church Fund, with a view to raising money for Church purposes in the Isle of Man, by which already there has been brought in a sum of about £4,000.
