Archdeacon Wills 1800 #71, Maughold, of Mary Allen als Lace, widow of Revd Thomas Allen, of Ramsey:

 

"Know all men by these present that I Mary Allen alias Lace of the town of Ramsey, widow, being reminded and disposed to settle and dispose of the worldly goods and effects where I am possessed and entitled unto, do for and in consideration of the natural love and affection I have and do bear unto the several persons hereafter named dispose of my said property in manner following: I give grant and settle unto and upon my GRANDSON ALLEN CHRISTIAN SON OF CAPTAIN WILLIAM CHRISTIAN of Ballnanage in the Parish of KK Bride the part or half of my house, outhouse and garden situate in Ramsey whereof one half is already settled upon MARY CHRISTIAN GRANDDAUGHTER by deed dated the 21st February 1797, to be possessed by him after the decease of HIS MOTHER MARY CHRISTIAN MY DAUGHTER which said Mary Christian is to have a life and estate in the said premises. I give grant and settle unto and upon my GRANDDAUGHTER MARY CHRISTIAN the other half of the said outhouse the same having been omitted in the said settlement to have and to hold to her and her heirs for ever after my decease. I give unto my SON CAPTAIN TOMAS ALLEN the sum of thirty pounds Manks being part of the amount of his mote to me for sixty pounds. I give unto JOHN ALLEN, ROBERT ALLEN and ANN ALLEN one guinea each. I give unto my DAUGHTER ALICE MARTIN one guinea. I give unto my GRANDDAUGHTER ANN SPRAINGER ten pounds. I give unto WILLIAM SPRAINGER SON of the said ANN Sprainger ten pounds to be laid at interest or landed security by the SON IN LAW EDWARD CHRISTIAN of Ramsey until he arrives at the age of 21 years. I give unto my GRANDDAUGHTERS MARY, ALICE, ELIZABETH and CATHARINE MARTIN one guinea each. I give unto my GRANDDAUGHTERS ANN COWLE, MARY, JANE and ELIZABETH CHRISTIAN one guinea each. I give unto the poor of KK Maughold Ramsey five pounds to be laid out at interest for their benefit forever. I give grant and estate unto my DAUGHTER JANE CHRISTIAN, the whole residue of my goods, chattels, credits and effects of what kind or nature soever to be possessed by her after my decease. For the true and faithful performancy of such grants and gifts I do hereby _ myself my heirs and assigns under the penalty of one thousand pounds to be levied as witness mark to my name this the 25th May 1799. AT A COURT OF COMMON LAW holden for the Northern district of this Isle at Ramsey the 18th day of February 1800: The before written Deed of Settlement having been acknowledged before the Deemster of this district and now openly published in this Court and no objections being offered against it, the same is therefore at the instance of the grantees ordered to be recorded. AT A CHAPTER COURT holden at Lezayre July 2nd, 1800: The Before written Deed of Settlement having been lawfully insaid[?] the same is accepted as the last will and testament of MARY ALLEN, and EDWARD CHRISTIAN HUSBAND OF JANE CHRISTIAN the residuary legatee therein appointed is sworn executor in Court in form of law and hath given pledges for payment of debts and legacies, namely Hugh Corlett and John Black, both of Ramsey. KNOW ALL MEN by these present, that we ALICE MARTIN, CATHARINE MARTIN, AND ELIZABETH MARTIN do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint our FATHER WILLIAM MARTIN for our true and faithful attorney for us to sue for . . . a legacy of one guinea each that GRANDMOTHER gifted us . . . Witness our names hereunto set this 24th July 1800. [signed] ELY MARTIN, ELIZABETH MARTIN, CATHARINE MARTIN. I WILLIAM MARTIN do hereby acknowledge to have received from EDWARD CHRISTIAN the sum of three guineas . . . being a legacy bequeathed unto my DAUGHTERS ALICE MARTIN, ELIZABETH MARTIN and CATHARINE MARTIN by their GRANDMOTHER MARY ALLEN, and I do hereby acquit, release, exonerate and discharge the said Edward Christian . . . Witness my hand this 30th July 1800. [signed] William Martin. WILLIAM MARTIN HUSBAND OF ALICE MARTIN do hereby acknowledge to have received the sum of one guinea a legacy bequeathed unto my said wife Alice Martin by her MOTHER MARY ALLEN . . . this 17th day of Sept 1800. MARY MARTIN, one of the GRANDDAUGHTERS OF MARY ALLEN late deceased do hereby acknowledge to have received the sum of one guinea a legacy bequeathed me . . this 17th Sept 1800. [signed] Mary Martin. WE MARY, JANE and ELIZABETH CHRISTIAN GRANDDAUGHTERS OF the testatrix MARY ALLEN ALIAS LACE do each of us hereby acknowledge to have received from Edward Christian the residuary legatee the sum of one guinea, the said sum being a legacy bequeathed us by our said grandmother . . . this 13th October 1800. I ANN ALLEN DAUGHTER OF the testatrix MARY ALLEN ALIAS LACE do hereby acknowledge to have received from Edward Christian the residuary legatee the sum of one guinea . . . this 13th October 1800. [signed] Ann Allen. I EDWARD SPRAINGER HUSGAND OF ANN SPRAINGER do hereby acknowledge to have received the sum of ten pounds . . . this 23rd August 1800. [signed] Edward Sprainger.

KNOW ALL MEN by these present that we THOMAS ALLEN and WILLIAM CHRISTIAN GUARDIANS and supervisors of WILLIAM SPRAINGER SON of the late EDWARD SPRAINGER of the town of Ramsey, have this day received off and from EDWARD CHRISTIAN of the said town of the sum of ten pounds being a legacy left and bequeathed by MARY ALLEN late of the said town widow deceased also, unto the said William Sprainger in and by an assignment of a mortgage which the said Edward Christian had taken on the land of Ballasloe in the parish of Maughold, which assignment comprises or includes the interest become due on the said sum up to this day. And we do hereby exonerate and discharge the said Edward Christian who was and is executor of the said Mary Allen of and from the said sum or legacy and hereby desire and request that the said legacy be forever cancelled on whatever register the same is registered. In witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names this 2nd day of February 1809. [signed] Thomas Allen, William Christian.

I CAPTAIN THOMAS ALLEN do hereby acknowledge to have received the sum of thirty pounds Manks being part of the amount of my note for sixty pounds which said sum was a bequest to me by my MOTHER MARY ALLEN from Edward Christian the residuary legatee, and also the further sum of two guineas the said sum being a legacy bequeathed unto MY SONS JOHN ALLEN and ROBERT ALLEN, and for which I bind myself to be accountable . . . this 17th November 1800. [signed] Thomas Allen. WHEREAS MRS. MARY ALLEN did bequeath a legacy of one guinea to ANN COWLE, I THOMAS COWLE HUSBAND OF the said ANN COWLE do hereby acknowledge to have received from the hands of Mr. Edward Christian the said legacy . . . this 16th February 1805.
