Archdeacon Wills 1791 #57, Andreas, of William Radcliffe:

‘In the name of God, amen. I William Radcliffe of the Parish of KK Andreas, being of sound mind and memory, do make this my last will and testament in manner following. First, I commit my soul to God and my body to Christian burial. I give and bequeath unto the poor of the same Parish the sum of three pounds to be laid out on interest for their use. I leave to each of my children five shillings legacy. Also, I give and bequeath to my loving wife Margery Radcliffe all my right and title to all my part of the lands in KK Andreas and KK Christ Lezayre during her lifetime, and then to fall and pass as lands of inheritance to my son William Radcliffe, and she my said wife consents that her part or half of said lands shall descend and pass as aforesaid, and I also bequeath to the said Margery Radcliffe the sum of five hundred pounds, being money laid out on land security, the interest of which xxx sum she is to enjoy during her life, and at her death the said sum to be disposed of among my children or to such of them as she the said Margery Radcliffe shall think most deserving of the same and if the said sum now at interest be paid to the said Margery Radcliffe, it is my will that Mr Thomas Allen & William Cleator (hereafter mentioned supervisors of my children) will see the said sum secured for the use of the said Margery Radcliffe and my children, & the said Margery Radcliffe is hereby empowered to dispose of the sum of five hundred pounds or any portion of it to any of my children during her lifetimes with the consent of said supervisors. Also, I give and bequeath to my daughter Ann the sum of twenty shillings as legacy. Also I bequeath to my daughter Mary the sum of sixty pounds that the twenty pounds to her by my mother in law Ann Lace are to be included in said sixty pounds, & the said sum to be paid here when she arrives to the age of twenty three years. I also bequeath to my daughter Margery the sum of sixty pounds to be paid her when she arrives to the age of twenty three years. Also, I bequeath to my sons Charles, James, & John the sum of fifty pounds each to be paid to them when they arrive to the age of twenty-three years. And if any of my said children die before they come to the age of twenty three years, or die without issue, that then the legacy bequeathed said child so dying is to return to my executor, and not to the rest of my children. And if my said son William die without lawful issue to inherit said lands, and my son Charles or any of the rest of my said children shall inherit the said lands settled as aforesaid xxx, they are to be deprived of the legacies of fifty or sixty pounds left them, and the same to be divided betwixt the rest of my children then living in proportion. I bequeath to my said son William Radcliffe, when he becomes to the age of twenty three years, the sum of three pounds a year to be paid him till he shall possess the land as aforesaid. I also appoint that my said wife shall take care and maintain my said children until they come to lawful years and help them to school. And I also appoint Mr. Thomas Allen & William Cleater supervisors of said children. Lastly, I nominate and appoint my said loving wife Margery Radcliffe whole and sole executrix of all the rest of my goods chattels and effects whatsoever, in testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 22nd day of February 1788. I Margery Radcliffe aforesaid do hereby agree & consent that the before mentioned legacies of land and cash bequeathed by my said husband William Radcliffe shall pass and be paid as set forth and mentioned in the above and within Will, for the faithful performance whereof I bind myself heirs and assigns under the penalty of eight hundred pounds current money of this Isle to be paid as all other fines within this Isle. William Cleater husband of Mary Radcliffe daughter of the within William Radcliffe do hereby acknowledge to be fully paid the legacy of sixty pounds bequeathed unto my said wife Mary by the last will and testament of her father William Radcliffe aforesaid, and I do hereby acquit release exonerate and discharge the executrix of the last will and testament of said William Radcliffe of all claims and demands and for on account of said legacy of sixty pounds as witness my subscription this 8th June 1795. Received of my Mother Mrs. Margery Radcliffe the sum of fifty pounds Manks currency being a legacy bequeathed me by my father William Radcliffe this 27th day of February1803. Witness present: William Kaneen. By me [signed] James Radcliffe.

21st August 1814, Mr. James Radcliffe acknowledges the before written receipt to be his proper act and deed. Before me [signed] Thomas Gawne.’
