To the Revd Edward Christian one of the Vicars Genl of the
Isle Men
The humble petition of Lewis Corkil of the
Town of Douglas
Sheweth
That John Cowle of the said town brother to Petr departed this
life at sea on the 13th day of January 1780 and
having sometime before his decease made his will
& left all and every his goods & efects to Petr
That Petr at the time of his sd brother deceased
was off the Island which prevented any notice
being taken of his sd decd brother's will.
That pet having lately come to this Isle
and thinks he hath an undoubted right to the
goods & effects of sd deceadts.
In tender consideration whereof
yr Petr humbly implore yr Revce
would be pleased to admit & approve of
sd will being legally proved at the next
consistory court that petr may be duly
sworn executor of his sd decd brothers will
& proceed to the management & care of
the goods & effects of the sd decadt & petr
will pray &c
Dr Brother I hope youl have a
little more sense in your head
till to offer to go to sea But stay
at home & enjoy the fruits of
your labour on shore there was
several prest when I was & preferred
to enter as volunteers But when them
was prest thid give them m[] me no
advance money nor never recd a
farthing since I have been prest
& am much obligd to you for your
kind offer for regard of the money
that you offered to send me []
Dont trouble yourself about any
such thing as there was cooper []
& his meat abroard before I come
so that I am before the mast &
cant rightly think what xxx in
debt to Mr Pulford But I dont
think that hell cheat you it is not
much I must conclude for my
paper is rather small Love to

Know all men by these presents
that I John Cowl of the town of Douglas
do hereby leave all my concerns belonging
to me in the said town & deliver all
into my brothers hands before two
witnesses as names is subscribed underneath

At a consistory court holden at Kk Patrick
on Thursday the 6th day of October 1785
Mark Christian one of the witnesses of the before
going will of John Cowll being sworn upon the holy evangelists
deposed that he was called upon by the testator to be a witness
thereto, and that he was personaly by and present when he
the testator being of sound and disposing mind, memory and
understanding duly exacted the same and for his last
will and testament on board His Majesty's ship of warr
the Serpent at Spithead on or about the month of Febry
1773 ; and John Kennaugh of the town of Douglas, Mariner
being likewise sworn upon the holy evangelist deposed
that he has often seen the said John Cowll write, is well
acquainted with his handwriting and that the paper
writing now exhibited to him purporting to be the last
will and testament of the sd John Cowll would pass upon
him for the proper handwriting of the sd John Cowll.
Whereupon the court hath declared the validity of the sd
will and the sd Lewis Corkill sworn executor thereof in form
of law and hath given pledges for the payment of
debts and legacies namely the sd Mark Christian
and John Kennaugh
