Archdeacon Will, Braddan 1784 #26, of James Oates, clerk of KK Braddan:

"In the name of God, Amen. I James Oates, Clerk of the parish of KK Braddan, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following:
First, I desire that all my just debts be paid, and that I may decently but not extravagantly be buried.
I bequeath to my Father & Mother, my brothers George Oates and William Oates to each of them two guineas, and to my brother George Oates wife one guinea; and likewise to my brother in law Peter Moore and his wife, and to my brother Charles Oates, two guineas to each of them; to my niece Ann Moore and the rest of her sisters, twenty five pounds British to each of them, to be given them at the age of twenty one years or marriage, and ... for the same from the time of my decease.
I give, bequeath and devise to my sister Elizabeth Oates my half or ... of those houses and concerns situated in the town of Douglas, and now held, possessed and occupied by Mr. Patrick xxx, and David Gelling of said town, which I purchased from my father Mr. James Oates, and all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, goods and chattles I give and bequeath to my sister Elizabeth Oates, and I do appoint my sister Elizabeth Oates executrix of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all others by me formerly made.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the fifth day of August in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and eighty three.

At a Chapter Court holden at KK Marown Jan (or June) 9th, ..., The Revd Robt Quayle and John Cannel the subscribing witnesses deposed . . .Whereas the executrix Elizabeth Oates is sworn duly to fulfill the last will . . . she has given pledges in form of law namely James Oates her father and William Oates her brother both of Braddan. June 16th 1785: Wm Oates deposed on the holy Evangelist that Peter Moore duly executed the within discharge ... I do hereby acknowledge to have received from my sister Elizth Oates exutrix of the last will and testament of my brother the Revd. James Oates . . . witnesses my hand this 10 day of ... 1785 [signed] Wm Oates.

I do hereby acknowledge to have rec'd from my sister Elizabeth Oates . . this 22d July 1784 [signed] Geo. Oates.
I do hereby acknowledge to have rec'd from my daughter Elizabeth Oates . . this 13 day of August 1784 [signed] James Oates.
